Professor Joav Merrick, MD, MMedSci, DMSc, is the Chair of the Scientific Advisory Board of Cephas Health Research Initiative Inc. He is also a professor of pediatrics working as a clinician in general pediatrics and the former medical director of the Division for Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (DIDD) in Israel under the auspices of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Social Services, State of Israel, responsible for the medical care of close to 10,000 persons with intellectual disability in more than 60 residential care centers and 260 community related residential care facilities (hostels or group homes and protected apartments). The DIDD provides services to 35,000 persons with intellectual disability in all of Israel with a life span approach.
From 1998, Professor Merrick was the initiator and, also, currently the director of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development in Israel. Academically he is professor of pediatrics at the Division of Pediatrics at the Hadassah Hebrew University Medical Center in Jerusalem and the Kentucky Children’s Hospital, University of Kentucky, Lexington, Kentucky, in the United States. In addition, he is a professor of public health at the Center for Healthy Development, School of Public Health, Georgia State University, Atlanta, United States.
Professor Merrick has numerous (1200+) publications in the field of pediatrics, child health and human development, adolescent medicine, rehabilitation, intellectual disability, disability, health, welfare, abuse, advocacy, quality of life and prevention (h-index 50). Received the Peter Sabroe Child Award for outstanding work on behalf of Danish Children in 1985 and the International LEGO-Prize (“The Children’s Nobel Prize”) for an extraordinary contribution towards improvement in child welfare and well-being in 1987. In 2017 appointed a Kentucky Colonel by the Commonwealth of Kentucky, the highest honor the governor can bestow to a person.
