Dr Afeez A Salami is the Secretary of the Research Governance Committee of Cephas Health Research Initiative Inc (Cephas)—a non-profit research organization, in Nigeria, founded in 2016 to advance evidence-based health policy and practice. Dr Salami is an oral and maxillofacial surgery specialist, public health researcher with experience in academia and leadership across Africa, Asia and Europe. Dr Salami holds a Bachelor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Ibadan, and he is a member of the West African College of Surgeons. Due to his passion for public health policy and practice, he is currently undergoing a Master of Science degree program in Public Health at the University of Suffolk, Ipswich, United Kingdom.
Dr Salami has held multiple positions in the academia across Asia. He was appointed as a Research Fellow at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Puthisastra between July 2023 and December 2024 and Assistant Professor, Department of Public Health Dentistry, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, India between July 2024 to July 2025. His leadership skills and contributions to the research output of the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Puthisastra earned him a promotion to the rank of Assistant Professor in November 2024. Due to his interest in global public health research, policy and practice, he joined the Department of Research, University of Puthisastra where he currently serves as a Senior Research Fellow. He is also a Senior Collaborator with the Global Burden of Disease Collaborators Network at the University of Washington, USA.
Dr Salami has published over 65 peer-reviewed articles in high-impact journals such as the Lancet, BMC Oral Health, PLOS One, Journal of the American College of Cardiology among others with over 10,000 citations, an h-index of 22 (on Google Scholar). He is also a reviewer to many high-impact journals including Health Science Reports, BMC Health Services Report, BMC Psychology, BMC Public Health, PLOS One, Medicine amongst others. Dr Salami is a journal editor. He is currently a topic editor with the Frontiers in Oral Health, an associate editor, Frontiers in Education, a guest associate editor of the Frontiers Editorial Board and an editorial board member of the Annals of Ibadan Postgraduate Medicine.
His research interests include oral cancer epidemiology, global health, and translational medicine and he has presented papers at multiple conferences on oral oncology, global health policy and practice as well as evidenced based research. Dr Salami’s passion for global health care equity has led to his collaborative efforts in research innovation, healthcare financing and sustainable development. In view of this, he has granted interviews and delivered lectures on healthcare burdens and recommended practical solutions for global policy change. He won the 2025 Impact Scholarship Award of the Leaders of Africa Institute to participate in 2025 Grant Writing and Funding Program.
Dr Salami is a member of numerous professional organisations including the Nigeria medical Association, Nigerian Dental Association, International Association for Dental, Oral and Craniofacial Research, Nigerian Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, West African College of Surgeons, Consortium for Head and Neck Cancer in Africa, Teesside University, Middlesbrough, UK, among others.
